In one of the more unusual recent events, a warrant was issued this week
for a Florida woman who has
decided to take her son and get out of town rather than allow his circumcision.
The 30-year-old Boynton Beach woman was issued a warrant from Circuit Judge
Jeffrey Gillen after she failed to appear in court after being ordered
by the judge to show up and turn
custody over to the child’s father.
The entire issue started as a
paternity case. The couple in question never married, and after appearing in court,
they signed a parenting agreement, and the mother agreed that the child
could be circumcised if the father paid for it.
She then had reservations, and brought the matter back into the courtroom
to fight against the agreement. The judge ruled that the agreement was
above her doubts, and the decision was upheld without comment in the 4th
District Court of Appeal.
Part of the reason for the strong defense of the parenting agreement was
a testimony from pediatric urologist Charles Flack, who stated that circumcision
is never required, but always recommended. Uncircumcised men are at risk
of developing penile cancer while uncircumcised men are not, and there
is also an increased risk of developing HIV and various other sexually-transmitted diseases.
They have not been able to find the mother as of yet, but once they do,
it is expected that she will be facing criminal charges for disobeying
a judge’s direct order, and the father will likely be awarded full custody.
