An action intended as a lesson for her children turned into child abuse
charges, when a Florida woman “brake-checked” her children,
causing one of them to hit her head on the windshield.
According to the accused, her 2 children in the backseat had been fighting
nonstop, so she hit the brakes suddenly. While it did stop the arguing,
unfortunately, her 3rd child in the front-seat was not wearing a seatbelt,
and flew forward, hitting her head hard enough to crack the windshield.
The accused says that she was completely unaware there were any problems
until police showed up on her doorstep three days later, charged her with
felony child abuse, and took her kids away. The 12-year-old who was injured
during the incident claims that she did in fact complain of lingering
dizziness and headaches, and that nothing was done about it.
Cases like this highlight the importance of child safety, and how unintended
consequences can have life-altering repercussions. The accused went on
record to say that she did not intend to hurt her children in any way,
and that she was not made aware of any discomfort the injured daughter
was experiencing or she would have brought her to the doctor. Regardless
of the details, though, the results of her decision caused her child to
be injured, and that was enough for police to have to take action.
Sentencing on the felony child abuse charge has not happened yet, but in
the meantime, all 3 children are living with their father.
