One of the most common causes of motor vehicle accidents is making a left
turn in front of oncoming traffic. The left hand turn is considered a
dangerous maneuver because the left turning vehicle enters the lane of
traffic for other vehicles.
In most states, motorists are required by law to signal their intent to
turn left at least 100 feet before reaching an intersection, and are also
required to make sure the turn can be made without endangering a passing
vehicle. The left turning vehicle also has to yield to all vehicles approaching
from the opposite direction, which are close enough to constitute an immediate hazard.
When these left hand turn rules are not followed, accidents are more apt
to happen. Unfortunately for one Daytona Beach man, when the driver of
the car he was riding in failed to obey these left hand turning rules,
he was killed in the accident that ensued.
Man Arrested After Fleeing the Scene of a Fatal Accident
Florida Highway Patrol reported that Corey Hill, 27, of Daytona Beach,
was driving a Firebird with two passengers inside Saturday night, when
he made a left turn into oncoming traffic. A Dodge Ram pickup crashed
into Hill’s Firebird and one passenger, Shawne Xavier Butler, 24,
was killed in the crash. The other passenger in the Firebird, Geoffrey
Kiev Blye, was hospitalized with serious injuries. The occupants of the
Dodge pickup were not hurt in the crash.
Hill fled the scene of the accident, but was tracked down by a Volusia
County Sheriff’s K-9 unit with the help of witnesses of the crash.
After being treated at Halifax Health Medical Center for minor injuries,
Hill was booked into Volusia County Jail. He faces charges of leaving
the scene of an accident involving death and causing serious injury while
driving with a suspended license.
